1519: Florentines, supported by Pope Leone X of the Medici family, obtained the authorisation to open Dante’s tomb and to move his bones to Florence. The poet’s birthplace that two hundred years before had bannished the author of the Divine Comedy, wanted to regain possession of Dante’s mortal remains. Ravenna, the protector of the poet, during the last few years of his life and proud guardian of his eternal rest, could not oppose. When the sepulchre was opened it was mysteriously empty. What had happened to Dante’s body? What mistery was behind the disappearance of his bones? This is the beginning of an investigation about the less-known mysteries concerning the great poet. It will look into the last years of Dante’s life in Ravenna and the cause of death, in order to solve one of the most fascinating enigma: is Dante’s face the one handed on from the tradition or had the poet different features? After seven hundred years, thanks to sophisticated technologies, a team of historians, anthropologists, computer engineers, succeeded in solving this mistery.
